Onion Crisis 2019.


India is facing heavy onion shortage due to the crops being destroyed by heavy rain fall. This resulted in the prices of onions being sky rocketed. Since it is the key ingredient in every Indian meal, the general public has been affected. This shortage has resulted in onions being smuggled to Nepal because the government of India has issued a band in export of onions to meet the demands of its own general public. Due to the high price of onions people are asking for onions in exchange of favors. The situation has gone crazier, so much so that the traffic police in India are taking onions as fine for traffic violation.



Nepal relies heavily on India to meet its demand for onion. Almost 98% of domestic demand is met through imports from India, according to the board. Not only onions, Nepali farmers are also dependent on other countries for onion seeds.



Not only in India, Bangladesh is having emergency supplies of onions flown-in amid a national shortage which has seen prices rise to record levels, with the prime minister claiming she has even been forced to stop eating the vegetable. Whereas, the government of Nepal has started importing onions from China. According to the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Board, Nepal 40 tons of onions from China is entering the Nepali market on a daily basis. Nepalese people are not used to the taste of Chinese onions. They are larger in size and moisture content higher compared to Indian onions. But there is no option but to consume Chinese onions. Since Nepal is highly dependent on the Indian markets for goods this shortage is sure to hamper the general public.
